Installing a residential generator: Complete process

Installing a residential automatic generator is an excellent solution for ensuring continuity of power supply in the event of a power failure. This process requires careful planning and precise execution to ensure a safe and efficient installation. Here's a step-by-step guide to the process.

generator generator installation

Understanding needs and choosing the right generator

The first crucial step is to meet the customer on site to understand his real needs. This meeting enables us to propose the generator model best suited to the situation. The discussion includes an assessment of critical equipment and systems requiring continuous power, and an estimate of the power required.

It's important to note that there are several types of generator: portable and automatic. Portable generators require manual installation by the customer every time there is an outage, which can be very time-consuming.

On the other hand, automatic generators, once installed, can power most or even all of the house in the event of a power failure. This means the customer doesn't have to worry about starting the generator in the event of a power cut. Automatic generators thus offer a practical and secure solution, eliminating the need for the customer to take out and connect the generator manually, especially in difficult weather conditions.

Selecting the ideal location

Determining the ideal location for the generator is essential. The location must meet building and municipal standards, while being convenient for installation and maintenance. You'll also need to choose the location for the transfer switch, and measure the wiring distance required between the generator and it.

Once these aspects have been defined, we suggest installing the generator either on a concrete slab, or on a raised aluminum support, to avoid the complications associated with snow removal.

Installation planning

Installation planning starts with a mutually convenient date. This ensures the availability of both the customer and the electricians. Once the date has been set, the service manager confirms the appointment. He ensures that all the necessary information is passed on to the electricians. This includes technical details of the installation, customer preferences and safety standards.

The manager also checks that all the required equipment is ready. He coordinates with the plumbers for gas connections. This coordination avoids delays and unforeseen events. Clear communication with the customer is maintained to answer any questions. This ensures a positive, stress-free experience for the customer.

Preliminary preparations

On the day of installation, electricians validate the location with the customer to ensure there are no last-minute changes. They usually start by levelling the slab with gravel and stone dust to ensure a solid, stable base. The generator is then anchored to the chosen slab or support.

Installation and electrical connections

The actual installation begins by preparing the wiring to the transfer switch. Electricians then turn off the power and modify the electrical inlet to accommodate the transfer switch. They finalize all connections, apply sealant to openings, bury cables if necessary, and restore power to the house.

Gas connections

Gas connections are made by our team or the customer's plumber, as agreed in the contract. This step is crucial to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply to the generator.

Start-up and testing

When the gas connections are ready, we contact the customer to make an appointment to start up the generator. This process includes several tests: gas pressure test, battery test, charger check, heating elements, and oil check. The generator is also programmed, registered for warranty purposes and connected to the Mobil Link system, if available, for remote monitoring.

Annual maintenance

To ensure the longevity and smooth operation of your generator, annual maintenance is recommended. We offer a maintenance plan that includes regular checks and preventive maintenance to ensure your generator is always ready to go when you need it.

By following these detailed steps, you can be sure that the installation of your residential generator will be carried out professionally, safely and efficiently, giving you peace of mind under all circumstances.
